Carmine bridge
The Carmine bridge is also known as the “Old Hospital” or “della Cartiera” bridge due to its proximity to the former hospital of S. Antonio Abate and Villa La Cartiera.
The construction of the nearby “spedale” with its church, according to tradition dating back to 541, is ascertained in the 13th century. Bernardino Campi in his “Historical Memoirs of the City of Pontremoli” recalls the damage suffered by the hospital of S. Antonio and by the adjacent ford during the floods of 1567 and 1569 after which the bridge will be rebuilt probably assuming its present appearance.
In 1611 we remember the building of a new church dedicated to the Vergine della Fonte in honor of the Maestà painted near the ford and then the bridge; in 1617 a convent of Carmelites of the Congregation of San Paolo was instead annexed and consequently the church was dedicated to the Beata Vergine del Carmine. From this moment the bridge was called “del Carmine”.
In 1731 Giovanni de’ Ricci, commendatory of the aforementioned commendation of San Leonardo in Pontremoli, ceded some assets to the Count of Pontremoli Mario Maffei who, thus, significantly expanded his vast land holdings. The knight owns numerous plots of various crops located north of Terrarossa, in addition to the mentioned Coduro mill, located on the left bank of the Magra, near the mentioned Carmine bridge, which has now replaced the original ford. The following year, a disastrous flood devastated the bridge which must necessarily be recovered.
Finally, the small bridge will be restored and restored in 1945 following the damage caused by fleeing German troops and in 2013 thanks to the provisions of the operational plan of the “Via Francigena 2012-2014” (DGR 1078/2011).
