Church of S. Giacomo del Campo
The church of San Giacomo al Campo or della Misericordia is located in the ancient Imoborgo of Pontremoli; the name “al Campo” testifies that the church was located in the open countryside, outside the village of Pontremoli before it extended towards the now disappeared Porta Fiorentina. It is mentioned for the first time in 1187 in the Bull of Gregory VIII. Since 1791 the church has been the seat of the Confraternity of Mercy. Of great value are the main altar, a painting with the Madonna of San Luca and an altarpiece depicting Sant’Antonio Abate and Sant’Agostino. The facade is punctuated by simple pilasters and has a marble frieze above the entrance portal representing the head of St. John the Baptist.
