Church of Saints Giovanni and Colombano

In 1892, following the construction of the railway and the Pontremoli station, the decision was made to demolish the parish church of SS. Giovanni e Colombano, located between Palazzo Galli and Palazzo Buttini and facing east on the main road that crossed the village from north to south. The intention was to continue the road axis created by the construction of the New bridge (today’s Ponte dei Quattro Santi) and guarantee easy and rational access beyond the Verde stream: the passage from the vicolo della Crà«sa was now too uncomfortable and dangerous for the numerous vehicles that wanted to cross the river since the bridge of S. Francesco di sotto was substantially not practicable. Crossing the vicolo della Crà«sa it is still possible to observe the hollows present on the walls to facilitate the passage of carts. The decision to demolish the church caused great agitation among the citizens, immediately divided between those in favor and against the operation, despite the fact that the church did not have great artistic peculiarities.

So in 1910 the land and the church were expropriated, which was demolished to make room for the construction of the bridge and the parish was transferred to the ancient “extra moenia” church of S. Francesco. On the initiative of the Bologna Administration in 1913 the Zambeccari bridge was then built with a reinforced concrete structure so as to integrate the project of the access road from Zeri to the Pontremoli railway station.

The more sarcastic, among the old sentimentalists, invented a joke that he repeated, on the notes of a famous romance “Sù e zù, su e zù ma la Cesa l’an gh’è pù!”.
