Diocesan Museum – Episcopal Palace

Set up in the Bishop’s Palace in the rooms which for two centuries housed the seat of the Bishops of the Pontremoli diocese, the Diocesan Museum was created with the aim of conserving, enhancing and promoting historical-artistic knowledge of works of sacred art. The objects on display come from the numerous churches in the Lunigiana area which, due to their often remote location, could not have guaranteed adequate protection. The Diocesan Museum was inaugurated on 31 January 2009 and was built at the behest of Bishop Eugenio Binini.

It is made up of two exhibition sections. The first section is dedicated to the Middle Ages, with objects dating back to the Christianization of the Val di Magra up to the development of the ancient Diocese of Luni. The second section is dedicated to sacred art, where the events of the Diocese of Pontremoli are retraced and the religious traditions of the upper Lunigiana are illustrated.
