Cavezzana Gordana

Small hills immersed in lush greenery host the modest group of houses in Cavezzana Gordana, gathered around the Church of the Assumption of Mary, which served as an autonomous parish from 1622 to 1986 and was already mentioned in the Bonifacian Tithes at the end of the 13th century. The building we see today is the result of a complete renovation in the 1930s, although it was originally in typical Romanesque style, with the apse facing east.

We are in the valley of the Gordana stream, nestled between the broad basins of the Verde and Teglia rivers, a valley divided between the municipalities of Zeri and Pontremoli. This fertile valley is sheltered from the cold north wind. The division of this valley is marked by the Stretti di Giaredo, a beautiful canyon, known since ancient times and, in more recent years, a popular tourist destination and a natural protected area.

In the lower Gordana Valley, Cavezzana d’Antena represents one of the key points, and together with the nearby village of San Cristoforo, it guarded the important road that descended from the Apennines along the right side of the Magra River, passing by the parish churches of Vignola and Saliceto, where travellers could view the stream in this very area.
