Stretti of Giaredo
The Stretti of Giaredo is a spectacular and colourful canyon, a natural paradise traversed by the Gordana Stream along the territories of Pontremoli and Zeri.
The canyon was formed through the erosive action of the Gordana Stream, which, subject to periods of flooding and drought, has shaped the canyon walls over time, which rise nearly 20 metres high.
The Gordana Stream originates from Monte Tecchione (1582 metres above sea level), near the Pass of the Due Santi and the ski resort of Zum Zeri. Its course stretches for about 18 km before reaching the area near Pontremoli, where it flows into the Magra River. The canyon is located in the last stretch of the stream, just a few kilometres from its confluence with the Magra, and takes its name from the village of Giaredo, which is close to the gorge and unfortunately now uninhabited.
The Stretti of Giaredo is the most easily accessible part of the gorge, approximately 1 kilometre long, characterised by imposing and narrow rocky walls that flank the stream.
Today, the Stretti and the Gordana Valley are part of the Natura 2000 Network, a European initiative for biodiversity conservation, and are recognized as a Special Area of Conservation, under the name “Valle del Torrente Gordana.” The site covers an area of 250 hectares and is also included in the UNESCO MAB Reserve of the Tosco-Emilian Apennines.
