Guinadi
The small village of Guinadi (600 metres above sea level), immersed in the dense woods of the Valle del Verde that embrace and welcome roads and towns with their vegetation in summer, is located along the route connecting Pontremoli to Borgotaro, in the Province of Parma.
The village of Guinadi is structured in three parts: the Castello, a group of houses at the highest point of the village; the Piazzale at the centre of the village, featuring the bell tower, the church of San Pietro, and the war memorial; and the area at the bottom of the village. Numerous sculpted portals and shrines can be found, including a curious one at the entrance of the Castello, topped with a stone bearing a pirate skull and crossbones.
Like most Lunigiana villages, Guinadi has a history of migration: after World War II, many families left the Valle del Verde for France in search of work and better fortunes. This village is home to the oldest commercial activity in the province of Massa Carrara, now a community cooperative, the Cooperativa di Comunità La Guinadese, established in 1919. The cooperative operates a bar and grocery store as well as a restaurant, where local traditions are preserved through cooking in “testi,” a Slow Food Presidium of Lunigiana.
