Oppilo

The village of Oppilo is situated on a hill halfway between the valleys of the Gordana and Teglia streams, in a strategic position relative to the ancient communication routes that crossed this side of the Val di Magra. An inscription on the entrance portal dates the church of Santa Felicita to 1778, but the 1470-71 tax records already mention a chapel dependent on the nearby parish church of Saliceto, so it is likely that the origins of the village date back to the medieval period.

The community of Oppilo had as many as 129 inhabitants in 1902. The favourable exposure of the cultivated lands surrounding the village has led to its agricultural vocation over time, particularly the production of quality wines, such as the famous Bigoncio, which was referred to as “Vino del Soglio” by the local dialect poet Luigi Poletti in 1898.
