The Ciclovia dei Castelli

The Ciclovia dei Castelli is a scenic cycling route that forms a loop through five municipalities of Lunigiana: Pontremoli, Filattiera, Villafranca, Bagnone, and Mulazzo. With a total length of 47 km, the route features a 180-meter elevation gain and includes 27 km of asphalt, 3 km of cobblestone paths, and 15 km of dirt roads. As you cycle, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the medieval villages of Lunigiana and explore many castles that are still rich with history.

Starting Point: Pontremoli

The cycling path begins symbolically in Pontremoli, particularly at the Ponte della Cresa. Here, you’ll find a bike maintenance station. From there, continue along the tree-lined Viale dei Chiosi, catching a glimpse of the magnificent Villa Dosi Delfini, a baroque jewel of Pontremoli. Following the specific brown signs (featuring a bike symbol and white arrows), you will reach the slopes of Colle del Piagnaro, where the Castello del Piagnaro stands, housing the Museum of the Lunigiana Stele Statues.

After exploring the castle, descend into the historic center of Pontremoli, an ancient medieval village surrounded by beautiful baroque buildings. Continue along the old cobblestone paths until you leave the town and reach Porta Fiorentina, one of the ancient defensive gates of Pontremoli. From there, cross the bridge and continue along the path until you reach the outskirts of the town, heading toward Annunziata. Only a few kilometers of paved road separate Pontremoli from the next town, Filattiera.

This route offers cyclists a unique blend of natural beauty and historical discovery! Would you like to know more about other parts of the path or the specific castles you can visit along the way?
