The Way of the Mountains or of Pontremolo

In Lunigiana and beyond, there is a road that connected the Levanto Canal Port with Brugnato and Pontremoli, where it intersects with the Via Francigena, which continues towards the Po Valley. This route is still used today and is known as the Via dei Monti or, for a stretch, the Via de Pontremolo. This road dates back to the 14th century and was created as a merchant route between Levanto and Lunigiana by the Republic of Genoa, which sought to develop trade by land and sea towards the Po Valley. Along this 57.3 km route, travelers pass through numerous forests, valleys, but also castles, pious churches, abbeys, and villages that tell an ancient history.

In Pontremoli

The route consists of 16 stages, 16 key points of interest, with Pontremoli serving as either the first or last stage, and it stretches through the entire historic center of the town.
